US Sales Tax Calculator

Add or remove sales tax using the combined state and local rate you enter.

Add sales tax to a pre-tax price or work back from a total, using the combined state and local rate that applies to you. The United States has no national sales tax, so you enter the rate yourself.

How it works

To add tax, multiply the pre-tax price by (1 + rate). To extract tax from a total, divide by (1 + rate). Sales tax rates are set by states, counties and cities, and what is taxable varies by jurisdiction, so look up the current rate from your state's department of revenue.

Examples

  • $80 pre-tax at 7.25% = $5.80 tax, $85.80 total.
  • $107.25 total at 7.25% = $7.25 tax, $100.00 pre-tax.
